NJFFL Week 1 Preview: All Eyes on Drake Maye and His $10.5M Price Tag

Ten months of auction regret and group-chat threats end Wednesday at 8:20 PM ET. Here's what's actually on the line.

Jersey City Crop Dusters at Tampa Sea Captains — proj. 171 to 167

The best game on the board and it's a four-point projected gap. Mike Donnelly rolls out the deepest backfield in the league — Jonathan Taylor ($3.2M) and Jahmyr Gibbs ($2.9M) both starting, with Ja'Marr Chase at WR1. Mike and Ron Klepacky answer with the most expensive player in the NJFFL: Drake Maye at $10.5M, roughly 42% of the entire cap tied to one quarterback. Behind him it's Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Brock Bowers — a monster lineup with almost no room left to fix anything. If Maye plays like a $10.5M quarterback, Tampa is the team nobody wants. If he doesn't, this is the most expensive mistake in league history.

Boston Alliance at Louisville Lightning — proj. 154 to 170

Dominic DiYanni's Lightning are the biggest favorite of the week, and it's a masterclass in cap work: Bijan Robinson at $5M is the splash, but Patrick Mahomes is starting at QB for $0.2M, with Puka Nacua, Nico Collins and Trey McBride filling in behind him. Justin Callow counters with Jayden Daniels at $1.2M and a wideout room of A.J. Brown, Tee Higgins and Jameson Williams — all $1.3M each. Boston is the better value team on paper; Louisville just has more top-end firepower. Watch MarShawn Lloyd at $4M — Louisville's biggest gamble by far.

West Hartford Wolverines at Florida Finatics — proj. 159 to 170

Joe Borell debuts the new Finatics helmet with the most balanced lineup in the league — De'Von Achane, Quinshon Judkins, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Justin Jefferson, all while paying Jared Goff $0.2M to quarterback it. That is how you win a title. Pat Gabriele's problem is on the injury report: Christian McCaffrey ($2.9M) is questionable, and George Kittle plus Dak Prescott can only carry so much if CMC is limited. Jordan Mason sitting on West Hartford's bench at $5.5M is the loudest unused contract in the NJFFL.

Chicago Icemen at Alaska Lookouts — proj. 160 to 156

Bryan Perez went full homer — Caleb Williams ($5M), Colston Loveland and Luther Burden III all starting, an all-Bears spine, with Chris Olave and Zay Flowers outside. Mike Gabes took the opposite route: Lamar Jackson for $2.3M and CeeDee Lamb for $1.3M is arguably the best two-player bargain in the league, though Xavier Worthy sitting on the bench at $3.9M is going to sting if the Lookouts lose by single digits. Four projected points apart. Monday night decides it.

Philadelphia Phreaks at Maine Machine — proj. 162 to 147

Joe Christiano built the boom lineup: Jalen Hurts ($5M), Kyle Pitts ($4.5M) and James Cook, with Drake London and DeVonta Smith outside. Jared Luciani's Machine is the quiet, sturdy build — Justin Herbert, both Pittsburgh backs in Rico Dowdle and Jaylen Warren, George Pickens and the Seahawks defense at $1.4M. Fifteen projected points is a lot to make up. Maine's path is Herbert going nuclear while Pitts does what Pitts usually does.

Montclair Heights Moonwalkers at Newark Immigrants — proj. 147 to 140

The family game, and the lowest total of the week. John Perez has Trevor Lawrence at $5M, Ashton Jeanty and Breece Hall in the backfield — but he's already down Zach Charbonnet ($3.5M) to IR before a snap is played. John Pappa Perez has the other $5M quarterback in Josh Allen, Travis Etienne and D'Andre Swift, and a questionable tag on Kyle Monangai ($5M) that could get ugly fast. Two rosters with a combined $18.5M in four players. Ugly is fine. Ugly counts the same.

Two things to watch

Lineups lock Wednesday at 8:20 ET, not Sunday. Anyone holding a Wednesday-night starter on the bench is donating points to the guy they hate most.

FAAB restraint. Max two wins per run. The dollar you burn panic-adding a Week 1 handcuff is the dollar you won't have when McCaffrey's knee makes news in October.
