NJFFL Week in Review, Wk 2: Fireworks, Faceplants, and the Great Divide

Week 2 gave us complete chaos across the NJFFL, headlined by massive individual blowouts and a handful of contenders putting the league on notice. Through two weeks, three teams sit unblemished at 2-0, while three franchises are staring into the abyss at 0-2 wondering where the points went.

Florida Finatics 158, Philadelphia Phreaks 136

In the week's premier heavyweight tilt, Joe Borell’s Florida Finatics stayed red-hot by outgunning Joe Christiano’s Philadelphia Phreaks. Borell unleashed the cheat code of the week in Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who went supernova for an absurd 68 points, backed up by a clean 45-point performance from Brock Purdy under center. Christiano put up a respectable fight with 136 points, but nobody was surviving the JSN blast radius this weekend.

Alaska Lookouts 128, Louisville Lightning 114

Mike Gabes and the Lookouts bounced back into the win column by taking down Dominic DiYanni’s Louisville Lightning in a hard-fought, two-possession duel. DiYanni got 47 points from Patrick Mahomes, but Gabes had the ultimate trump card out wide with CeeDee Lamb hanging 44 points on the board. Even with a goose egg from tight end Mike Gesicki (0 points), Alaska had just enough depth to hold off Louisville down the stretch.

Jersey City Crop Dusters 191, Newark Immigrants 105

Mike Donnelly’s Jersey City Crop Dusters unleashed absolute hell on Newark this week, posting the league's high-water mark at 191 points. Jonathan Taylor set the tone with a bruising 39-point display, overwhelming John Pappa Perez’s Immigrants from the opening whistle. Newark actually got a monster 62 points from quarterback Josh Allen, but an Antonio Williams doughnut (0 points) and a lethargic supporting cast left them buried in an 86-point avalanche.

West Hartford Wolverines 185, Chicago Icemen 83

Pat Gabriele’s West Hartford Wolverines orchestrated a total demolition job against Bryan Perez’s Chicago Icemen. Dak Prescott (53 points) and Kenneth Walker III (34 points) tore the game wide open for West Hartford, leaving Chicago in complete disarray. Perez suffered a brutal 133-point regression from Week 1, dragged down by an offense that couldn't muster anything, including a meager 6 points from running back Javonte Williams.

Tampa Sea Captains 153, Boston Alliance 93

Mike and Ron Klepacky kept their pristine record intact with a comprehensive 60-point rout of Justin Callow’s Boston Alliance. The Sea Captains were piloted by a vintage masterclass from Davante Adams, who scorched Boston for 50 points. Callow’s Alliance couldn't crack triple digits for the second straight week, limping to 93 points and never threatening Tampa’s comfortable double-digit advantage.

Montclair Heights Moonwalkers 88, Maine Machine 64

It wasn't pretty, it wasn't art, but it counts just the same: John J. Perez’s Montclair Heights Moonwalkers took down Jared Luciani’s Maine Machine in a 1920s-style defensive slog. Perez fell 109 points shy of his Week 1 total but caught the ultimate break by drawing Luciani, whose Machine sputtered to just 64 points. A win is a win, but both managers will want to burn the game film.

Standings Check

The standings board shows a league already splintering into tiers. Florida (2-0, 309 PF), Tampa (2-0, 293 PF), and Montclair Heights (2-0, 285 PF) sit atop the mountain with spotless records. However, Montclair Heights is the undisputed poster child for winning ugly—boasting an undefeated mark despite putting up a league-wide low among winning teams this week with just 88 points.

Down in the 1-1 pack, West Hartford (335 PF), Alaska (319 PF), Jersey City (315 PF), and Louisville (309 PF) represent the high-scoring threats who are losing well; Gabriele's Wolverines actually pace the entire league in total scoring despite their lone blemish, with Alaska, Jersey City, and Louisville hot on their heels. Chicago (299 PF) and Philadelphia (246 PF) round out the 1-1 middle class. Meanwhile, panic sirens are blaring at the bottom: Newark (0-2, 247 PF), Boston (0-2, 204 PF), and Maine (0-2, 129 PF) are all searching for their first win, with Luciani’s Machine averaging an agonizing 64.5 points per week through two contests.

Power Rankings

The top tier saw serious movement this week, headlined by the Florida Finatics leaping three spots into the No. 1 overall ranking behind their 155 PPG average and recent scores of 158 and 151. Right behind them are the steady Tampa Sea Captains (up 3 to No. 2, scoring 153 and 140) and the explosive West Hartford Wolverines, who surged up five spots to No. 3 after erupting for 185 points. Montclair Heights slips two spots to No. 4 despite being 2-0; a wild 55-point swing down to 88 points will ding your profile every time. Rounding out the top half are Alaska (up 2 to No. 5) and Jersey City (up 4 to No. 6, coming off 191 points).

The slide starts with Louisville (down 4 to No. 7 after tumbling to 114) and the Chicago Icemen, who plummeted a staggering seven spots to No. 8 after cratering from 216 down to 83. Philadelphia sits at No. 9 (down 3), while the basement remains cold and dark: Newark drops to No. 10 (down 1, scoring 105 and 142), Boston holds flat at No. 11 (93 and 111), and Maine anchors the board at No. 12 (0% all-play, posting identical duds of 64 and 65).
